This chapter develops a simple user interface that uses components, containers, layout managers, and events, all of which are provided by the AWT, or Application Window Toolkit. Using this tool to develop user interfaces ensures that they are platform independent. Though this chapter focuses on the basics of user interfaces, it provides enough pieces to develop fairly complicated interfaces containing many components.
This chapter is the first to include several code examples. In preceding chapters we did not have enough pieces to show a useful example, but now we can display things on the screen via a user interface. The examples in this chapter use several techniques to accomplish similar results. Review these examples to get an idea of the flexibility available in the Java language.
