The GWIA as a Connector Between SMTP and Other GroupWise Processes

Let's take a closer look at some of the different elements within the GWIA and decide what we need to do to increase the availability of services.

Apart from SMTP, the GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) has several subprocesses that can deliver POP3, IMAP4, LDAP, and some other services. But this is not what we're concerned with in this chapter; to be honest, if you take the high availability of your GWIA seriously, you will want to turn off all of these other services, because they will potentially decrease the stability of your GWIA. So our first advice is that if you really need any of these services for your environment, consider creating a specialized GWIA on a separate box. In real life we've seen too many examples of a GWIA abending on a nonessential POP3 thread for a single user, wrecking the availability of SMTP for all. More on how to create a specialized GWIA can be found in Chapter 10, "Installing and Configuring the GroupWise Internet Agent."
