Installing GroupWise Monitor Agent

The GroupWise Monitor Agent can be installed on a Windows NTclass operating system (2000, XP, and so on) or on a Linux server. This chapter will guide you through the installation of the GroupWise Monitor Agent on Windows. Following that, we will demonstrate installing the GroupWise Monitor Application on the Linux platform.

The GroupWise Monitor Agent can be installed on a Windows NTclass operating system (2000, XP, and so on). We recommend installing GroupWise Monitor on an auxiliary Windows 2000 workstation or server computer that you intend to always keep running. By doing this, the GroupWise Monitor can monitor your system continually. This section assumes that you are installing GroupWise Monitor on a Windows NT/2000 computer.

Preparing Your Windows Environment by Installing Windows SNMP Services

Before even trying to install the GroupWise Monitor Agent, you should install the SNMP services for Windows. The following are steps needed to install SNMP services on a Windows 2000 workstation machine:

1.

Go to the Control Panel.

2.

Select Add/Remove Programs.

3.

Select Add/Remove Windows Components.

4.

Choose the Management and Monitoring Tools option.

5.

Click Next to allow Windows to install the SNMP.

To confirm that the SNMP service is installed and running, do the following:

1.

Go to the Control Panel.

2.

Select Administrative Tools.

3.

Select Services.

4.

Look for SNMP Service.

With SNMP services enabled, you can now proceed to the GroupWise Monitor installation.

Installing GroupWise Monitor Agent on Windows

The GroupWise monitor installation utility is located in your GroupWise 7 SDD\ADMIN\MONITOR directory.

Following are the steps for installing the GroupWise Monitor Agent:

1.

Run the SETUP.EXE program in this directory.

2.

Proceed to the GroupWise Monitor: Components screen, shown in Figure 18.1.

3.

Select the GroupWise Monitor Agent.

Later in this chapter, you will install the GroupWise Monitor Application. It's generally easier to implement the agent first, and then implement the GroupWise Monitor Application as needed.

Note

The GroupWise Monitor Agent is sufficient for monitoring your GroupWise system. The GroupWise Monitor Application allows an administrator to see the information on the GroupWise Monitor Agent from additional interfaces such as HDML and simple HTML. It also allows the administrator to drill down into each GroupWise agent's HTTP port from a single entry point.

4.

Specify the correct IP address and port for the GroupWise Monitor utility, as shown in Figure 18.2, and then click Next.

Note

The GroupWise Monitor Agent can itself be accessed from a Web browser. That's the purpose of the Port field.

5.

GroupWise Monitor can monitor both your GroupWise mail environment and your GroupWise Messenger environment, as shown in Figure 18.3. GroupWise Messenger is described in Chapter 29, "Configuring a GroupWise Messenger (Instant Messaging) System." Select at least the GroupWise option and click Next.

6.

Specify the path to a WPDOMAIN.DB in your system, from which the GroupWise Monitor Agent can read the configuration information about agents in your system, and then click Next.

7.

Select the language you would like for GroupWise Monitor, and click Next.

8.

View the summary and make sure that everything is correct, and then click Next. If it is not correct, you can use the Back button to correct things.

The GroupWise Monitor Agent is now installed; you should further tune the Monitor Agent, as explained in the next section.
