Overview of GroupWise Internet Addressing

To begin with, it is important to provide a high-level overview of what GroupWise Internet addressing is and give the background as to why Internet addressing was added to GroupWise. More detail will follow on the basics of Internet addresses and how GroupWise addressed messages using the old-style addressing scheme before GroupWise supported Internet addressing.

GroupWise was designed and engineered before the Internet was widely in use for sending SMTP messages via email. As a result, GroupWise, like many other solutions from that same time period, used a proprietary addressing scheme made up of the following elements: domain, post office, and userID. Because of this, if you were to create a new GroupWise system and then install the GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) to send SMTP messages via the Internet, your users would not be able to simply type an address in the format of user@internetdomain.com and expect the GroupWise system to know what to do with this address. Before GroupWise supported native Internet-style addresses, the administrator got around this issue by setting up a series of system addressing rules that allowed users to send mail in the format of user@internetdomain.com.

Novell, knowing that GroupWise must be able to natively understand Internet-style addresses, came up with a solution that was first introduced in GroupWise 5.5. This is where the term Internet addressing was introduced to GroupWise.

When an administrator enables Internet addressing, all GroupWise agentsincluding the GroupWise clientbecome aware of this fact, and are able to resolve Internet-style addresses natively. This gives the administrator a lot of flexibility regarding the way in which GroupWise can address and resolve Internet-style addresses.
