In the first two sections of this book, you have been introduced to the internal and external world of the ISSO. The third and last section of this book discusses the major challenges for the ISSO, now and into the future. The most challenging threat to the ISSO—and a growing threat—is that of information warfare, including terrorism. Although various types of information warfare have been around since someone first used the term information, because of high technology that threat is rapidly growing. Therefore, Section III begins with an introduction and overview of information warfare (IW).
The IW chapter is followed by a chapter on the ISSO and responsibilities related to ethical conduct. This new chapter was considered important since ethics and being an ISSO professional go hand-in-hand, while at the same time, ethical conduct throughout many societies, cultures, governments, and corporations is on the decline.
The next two chapters, "ISSO Career Development" and "How to Market Yourself as an ISSO," discuss the education, training, and experience needed to qualify for a position as an ISSO, as well as how to "interview by portfolio" to gain the ISSO position you've been looking for.
As part of that career progression, there comes a point where an experienced ISSO decides that working for oneself is more rewarding than working for others. Thus, the chapter "So, Are you Ready to Become an InfoSec Consultant?" is provided. This chapter describes how to determine whether InfoSec consulting is right for you and, if so, how one goes about getting started.
The final chapter of this book looks into the future and discusses the challenges and risks the ISSO will face in this 21st century.
