Where to Run Mon


In the Linux Enterprise Cluster we will run Mon on a cluster node manager, a machine outside the cluster (see Figure 17-1). The cluster node manager can also offer services to other cluster nodes such as a print spooler, an NIS or LDAP server, a fax server, an email server, and so forth.

Note 

The cluster node manager should be built in a high-availability configuration (a pair of servers running Heartbeat as described in Part II) in order to avoid a single point of failure. Examples of how to use Mon with Heartbeat are discussed later in this chapter.

Figure 17-1 shows Mon running on the primary cluster node manager and one snmpd daemon running on each cluster node. We'll see in the recipe that follows how to configure Mon to communicate with the snmpd daemon on each node.
