Chapter 13: Third-Party Registry Utilities

Overview

Shall I refuse my dinner because I do not fully understand the process of digestion?

Oliver Heaviside

Each new version of the Microsoft operating systems, including Windows XP, provides many new configuration or administrative utilities. Each of these tools offers new and more convenient methods of editing the registry than built-in registry editors (Regedt32.exe). Despite this fact, some registry tricks (for example, most of those presented in the previous chapter) can't be performed without editing the registry directly. Microsoft is including more and more advanced methods of editing the registry, and most of them are implemented as Control Panel applets of new administrative utilities and wizards. However, thirdparty developers aren't asleep on the job, either.

If you're an experienced Internet user, you'll find lots of useful and handy freeware utilities to help you maintain and troubleshoot your registry.

In this chapter, I'll provide a small list of Windows NT/2000/XP registry utilities, which I personally consider to be the most helpful.
