Chapter 11: Data Management in Excel

Overview

This is the first of three chapters that deal with the extensive and important theme of databases. This chapter begins with a section on fundamentals that ends with the perhaps surprising conclusion that Excel is not a database program and should not be entrusted with the management of large data sets.

Knowing that you will nonetheless manage smaller data sets with Excel (and remember my warning only when there is a changeover to a genuine database system that requires an enormous effort), the remainder of the chapter provides information on the functioning of Excel for the management of data in worksheets.

As for the two chapters to follow, there we will consider how from Excel you can access data that reside in an external (genuine) database system. In the midst of all this stands the new ADO library. Finally, the third database chapter is concerned with methods of data analysis (independent of where the data originate). Here pivot tables take center stage.
