Acknowledgments
The idea for a simple, self-help book based on the 80/20 principle came, independently, from Laurence Toltz and Nicholas Brealey. Steve Gersowsky was also instrumental in encouraging me to write a book that would be accessible to everyone.
I owe a huge debt to Laurence Toltz for his critique and encouragement every step of the way. He has been extraordinarily generous with his time and many of his ideas are incorporated here. His only motivation has been to help readers live a fuller and better life without getting hooked on the materialistic drug of more that is so prevalent and destructive today. Laurence himself is an author, so please look out for his excellent books.
I have also received invaluable views, feedback, and critiques along the way from Tom Butler-Bowden, whose inclusion of The 80/20 Principle in his terrific book 50 Self-Help Classics also spurred me to write a sequel.
The other person who has influenced me greatly is Jonathan Yudelowitz, a psychologist and business coach. Jon and I were originally going to write this book together and pretty much all the psychological ideas here come from his insight. Jon is a world-class coach, specializing in helping CEOs and their teams work together to beat competition.
Drafts of the book ” oh, so many drafts, you have no idea how difficult it is to write a short, simple book ” were scrutinized and found wanting by many of my friends and I m grateful to them all. I d particularly like to mention Andy Costain, Mary Saxe-Falstein, Juliet Johnson, Penelope Toltz, Robin Field, Chris Eyles, Matthew Grimsdale, Anthony Rice, and Jamie Reeve. Special thanks also especially to my friend and personal assistant Aaron Calder, who has helped with the book in innumerable important ways.
My toughest critic has been Nicholas Brealey and a better book has been forged in the fire of his feedback. A bouquet also to Angie Tainsh and Victoria Bullock for their excellent work on the conception and marketing of the book, and special thanks to Sally Lansdell for her superb editing, figure design, and encyclopedic knowledge of transportation in Bedrock.
Finally, thanks to the huge number of readers of my earlier books, especially those of The 80/20 Principle , who have shared with me how the books have helped their lives. The pointers from that experience have been included here so that many new readers can benefit. If you have any comments on Living the 80/20 Way , please email them to richardjohnkoch@aol.com.
