TextEdit: CREATING SOFT DROP SHADOWS

Okay, I know this sounds like a Photoshop technique, but the ability to create a soft drop shadow effect behind your type is built into TextEdit. Here's how to "drop it." Create your text (large type sizes work best) and highlight it. Then press Command-T to bring up the Font panel. At the top of the panel is a button with a large letter T with a slight drop shadow on it. Click on this to turn the shadow feature on (if you don't see this button, choose Show Effects from the Actions pop-up menu in the bottom-left corner of the panel). The three sliders to the right of the T control the Shadow Opacity (how dark the shadow will be), Shadow Blur (how soft it will be), and Shadow Offset (distance the shadow appears from the letter), respectively. To create a soft drop shadow, drag the middle slider (Shadow Blur) to the right (dragging it to the center looks pretty good). You can also control the angle of the light source using the Shadow Angle circle to the immediate right of the three sliders. Just drag the small dot in the circle where you want your light source. Cool!
