Kerning is the act of adjusting the space between letters. (When it's called kerning, that usually refers to adjusting the space between only two letters. If you're adjusting more than two letters at once, it's usually called tracking.) At standard text sizes like 10, 11, and 12, you don't normally worry about kerning, but when you start creating display-sized type (like 72-point type), sometimes wide gaps appear between letters. (The space between a 72-point capital W and the small letter "a" is a perfect example.) To tighten the space between letters, highlight the two letters, then go under the Format menu, under Font, under Kern, and choose Tighten. This is a very slight adjustment, so you'll probably have to run it more than once (okay, probably more than five or six times). To Loosen the space, choose Loosen as many times as you need. |
