Summary

The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is one of the most drastically modified features in Windows Vista compared to earlier versions of Windows. With almost surprising success, Microsoft has managed to combine significant power with an interface that you can actually learn and get comfortable with in an afternoon. It now has most of the features we have been asking for over the past several years, and the integration of IPsec and firewall is nothing short of a spectacular improvement in security manageability. We urge you to take a deep look at this firewall to determine how you can best use it.

There are certainly some features missing though. The most notable is the lack of per-interface profiles. All interfaces use the same profile-the most restrictive one. This means that if you use a VPN connection from a public network, even the VPN interface is configured with the public profile. You can work around that using the per-interface rules, but it would be much simpler with a per-interface profile. We are told this is coming in future versions of Windows. We would also greatly appreciate better integration between connection security and firewall rules.
