Chapter Review

Setting up and configuring Serviceguard packages constitutes a large portion of the work of setting up a Serviceguard cluster. We have looked at application packages in the context of an in-house application. This required us to set up an application monitoring script. If you are lucky enough to run an off-the-shelf application such as Oracle RDBMS or a Web server such as Netscape, you may be able to utilize a Serviceguard Toolkit to assist in the setup of your application package. If not, we need to have a working knowledge of writing POSIX shell scripts as well as a working knowledge of how our application operates; does it need an application monitoring script in the first place? Once we have set up the package, we must do a stress test on the configuration as well as on any monitoring scripts we have written. This involves killing the application and the monitoring scripts and ensuring that the application is successfully moved to an adoptive node. This testing is crucial before we put the Serviceguard configuration into a production environment.

In the next chapter, we look at aspects of managing our cluster including adding and removing nodes and packages. A package we add to the cluster makes use of a Serviceguard Toolkit.
