Intended Audience

 < Day Day Up >

The material in this book assumes some familiarity with the Java programming language and the use of the Java API, such as would be gained in two semesters of Java or a course on Java as a second language for programmers fluent in another language. This book is not intended to be a text for an introductory course on Java and is not appropriate for students trying to learn Java for the first time, even if they are fluent in another programming language, such as C++. Minimally, students using this book should have a fairly good grasp of the Java programming language, including topics such as how to write a GUI program, how to design classes and instantiate objects, and the mechanisms used to invoke methods and pass parameters. Any additional background that the student has (such as an understanding of the processes from a course on operating systems, or memory usage such as would be covered in a course on programming languages) will help the student better understand the principles put forth in this text but are not necessary to understanding the material in the text.
