I would like to dedicate this book to my parents, who proudly tell anyone who will listen that there is an author in the family. I am especially grateful to my partner, William, for his support and encouragement, and to Scruffy, our cairn terrier, who kept me from working too many continuous hours at my many computers by subtly reminding me of the importance of the occasional walk.

Steven D. Kaczmarek MCSE, MCT, Senior Technical Writer, Enterprise Management Content Group, Microsoft Corporation. Steven D. Kaczmarek has been a trainer, author, and consultant since 1991, providing enterprise networking, administration, consulting, and training support through his company ENACT Solutions Corporation. In March 2003, he joined the Systems Management Server documentation team as senior technical writer and assumed responsibility for all SMS 2003–related documentation as project leader. He holds training and professional certifications (MCT and MCP) from Microsoft Corporation for Windows NT and Windows 2000 and Systems Management Server 1.2 and 2.0, as well as the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification.

He is the author of The Systems Management Server 2.0 Administrator’s Guide published by Microsoft Press. In 2001, he completed work on Mike Meyer’s MCSE Windows 2000 Directory Services Exam Passport published by Osborne\McGraw-Hill. He was also the author or contributing author of three books published by QUE: Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Exam Guide, Windows NT Server 4.0 Exam Guide, and Windows NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise Exam Guide.

In prior positions, Steve provided a variety of client PC support services through the IS departments of several large corporations, including purchasing and installation of PC hardware and software, network management, maintenance and help desk support, and customized training.

Steve has a master of science degree from Loyola University with a specialization in computational mathematics.

Acknowledgments

My sincere thanks to the editorial team at Microsoft Press. Their dedication and hard work were outstanding in every respect. The editorial review process can be frustrating, but they made it comfortable for me and I greatly appreciate their efforts, their comments, and their patience. In particular, thanks to Jeff Koch and later Martin DelRe for accepting and shepherding my book proposal and to Valerie Woolley, Bob Hogan, Joe Gustaitis, and all the others, the excellent editorial team who made sure I dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s.

Thanks also to John Howie, for his contributions to the chapters about software updates and the patch management process in SMS 2003. I appreciate the time and effort he committed in assisting me with this material in a very short time frame. I would also like to express my gratitude to all my training and consulting colleagues. It is through the healthy and often spirited exchange of information in a variety of forums—along with my own training and consulting experiences—that I have developed a deeper appreciation for this product and gained greater insight into its strengths and foibles. In this vein, a special thank you to the contributors of the SMS MCT forum as well as MYITForum.com for your generous commitment to keeping the SMS community informed about SMS.

Last, but by no means least, many thanks to my colleagues on the SMS 2003 documentation team at Microsoft Corporation. As many of you know, I joined this team in March 2003 and became the project leader for all SMS 2003 documentation. This is a terrific group of talented individuals who are passionate about SMS and dedicated to producing the highest quality documentation for you, their customers. By sharing their expertise with me, as well as proofreading several of the more tricky chapters for me (on their own time, of course), I am certain that this book will complement and enhance the rich set of documentation already published about SMS 2003 by Microsoft. So thanks Terri, Susie, Anat, Cathy, Stacey, Bill, Carol, Liz, Scott, Suzanne, and Kim—and Kristina (especially for hiring me in the first place)!
