Modifying the Installation

[Previous] [Next]

When you first install SMS 2.0, you may decide to include only those components or features that you know you will be using right away. For example, you may decide to install the Hardware Inventory Client Agent, the Software Inventory Client Agent, and Remote Tools, but nothing else initially. At a later time, your needs or the needs of your organization may change, and you may find that you need to enable software metering for your site. Or you might need to move the SMS database to a different SQL Server or change SQL Server security. To modify your installation, follow these steps:

  1. Either insert the SMS 2.0 CD, or run SMS 2.0 Setup.exe from the Smssetup\Bin\<platform> directory. The SMS Setup Wizard welcome screen is displayed as it was during the actual installation. Click Next.
  2. Because the Setup Wizard detects that you have already installed an SMS 2.0 site server on this computer, it displays that information in the System Configuration screen, shown in Figure 2-38.

  8. Click Next to display the Setup Installation Options screen, shown in Figure 2-41, and select the additional SMS 2.0 components or features you want to install. Note that even though the instructions on this screen imply that you can clear options you do not want installed, you cannot actually remove an option once it has been installed without removing SMS 2.0 and reinstalling it. The instructions here merely remind you that you can both select and deselect available options while on this page.

  10. Click Next to display the SMS Service Account Information screen, shown in Figure 2-42, where you can modify the SMS Service account name or password.
  11. Click Next to display the Database Modification screen, shown in Figure 2-43. Make any SMS or software metering database modifications here. Note that you must first use SMS Service Manager to stop all SMS services before running the Setup Wizard if you choose to modify database information. This screen also assumes that you have already modified the databases in SQL Server.

  13. Click Next to display the Integrated Security For SMS Site Database screen, shown in Figure 2-44. As with other database changes, you need to make the appropriate security and account changes in SQL Server before you make any changes here.

  15. Click Next to display the Integrated Security For Software Metering Database screen, as shown in Figure 2-45, which enables you to switch between integrated and standard security for accessing the SMS software metering database. As with other database changes, you need to make the appropriate security and account changes in SQL Server.
  16. Click Next to display the Completing The Systems Management Server Setup Wizard screen, shown in Figure 2-13. Remember that you can click the Back button from any of these wizard screens to return to a previous screen and modify your entries. Confirm your choices and then click Finish.

The Setup Wizard will proceed to add components and modify parameters as you specified. If it encounters any problems—for example, if you forgot to modify SQL Server security before running Setup—SMS will display a warning message giving you the opportunity to exit the Setup Wizard and correct the problem.
