If you're using SQL Server 6.5 with Service Pack 4, you may need to add a patch to your SQL server if you encounter random general protection faults or lockups related to WMI or the SMS Administrator Console. To do so, locate the file \SQLSetup\SQLHotfix\platform\Sqlctr60.dll on the SMS 2.0 CD and copy it to the \MSSQL\Binn folder on the SQL server. SQL Server 6.5 with Service Pack 5 and SQL Server 7.0 are not affected.

Along similar lines, you may find that the SQL Server Performance Monitor counters are disabled by default when the SMS Provider is installed on a server running SQL Server 6.5. You will see no SQL Server-related objects when you run the Windows NT Performance Monitor, nor will the SQL Server Performance Monitor display any data. The SQL Server Performance Monitor counters must be enabled through the registry on the SQL server. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Performance. Locate the parameter entry Library, double-click on the entry to display the String Editor dialog box, and change the value to Sqlctr60.dll to enable the counters. To disable the counters when you have finished your analysis, reset the Library value to " " (empty quotation marks) by double-clicking on the Library entry and deleting the reference to Sqlctr60.dll in the displayed String Editor dialog box. (This scenario does not apply to SQL Server 6.5 with Service Pack 5 and SQL Server 7.0.)

However, making this change may result in random WMI or SMS Administrator Console errors. You can clear up the problem by restarting the SMS Administrator Console. However, for this reason, you should enable the SQL Server performance counters only when it is necessary to analyze a suspected performance-related problem.
