Welcome to the wonderful world of Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0. This book provides you with the insight and tools necessary to successfully administer SMS 2.0. We will explore the many components and features of SMS, including package distribution, hardware and software inventory, remote diagnostics, and software metering. We will discuss the installation procedures for site systems and clients, and we'll walk through the implementation of an SMS site hierarchy. We'll also look at relevant SMS 1.2 migration and at disaster recovery and database maintenance recommendations. Since SMS 2.0 was first released in March 1999, Microsoft has issued SMS 2.0 Service Pack 1. The enhancements included with Service Pack 1 are incorporated into the discussion throughout this book. This chapter introduces SMS 2.0 and describes what SMS 2.0 is all about.
