Chapter 13. Saving Your Work

Obviously, saving and backing up your Avid work are important processes, as they are with any software you use. Avid Xpress Pro makes saving and backing up your work easy and even effortless with some of its auto-save features. Avid Xpress Pro even makes it easy to move from one Avid system to another. This allows you to offline a sequence on a system like Avid Xpress Pro and online or finish a sequence on an Avid Media Composer or Symphony. Avid's entire family of products communicate well together and make moving and managing media from one system to the next easy. In certain instances, such as using Avid's Unity storage solution, this process is seamless.

There are basically two methods of savingan explicit save triggered by you or an auto-save, triggered by the software. To save your work, choose Save from the File menu or press Command+S (Macintosh) or Control+S (Windows).

If you have a bin highlighted, the Save command becomes Save Bin (see Figure 13.1).

If you have the Project window highlighted, the Save command becomes Save All. This is the preferred saving method due to the fact that all the bins are saved and your user settings are also saved and updated. A small icon is displayed in the title bar of the bin if a bin has yet to be saved (see Figure 13.2).

Figure 13.2. If a bin hasn't been saved, a small icon will appear at the top of the bin. For Windows platforms, it's a small asterisk. For Macintosh systems, it's a small diamond.

NOTE

Save and save often. Because you can edit so quickly on Avid Xpress Pro, try to make it a habit of saving every 1015 minutes. It's best to always save your work prior to importing any files and before and directly after you render anything. These are two functions whereby you can get burned. Occasionally, you'll go to import a file, and the file ends up being corrupt. Your system crashes and you have to restart it. If you save prior to importing, all your work will remain intact.
