E-Mailing a File


A great way to share a file (or several files)a Microsoft Word document, a picture, or even an entire Web pageis to include it as part of an e-mail message. The file is included as a separate part of the messagean attachmentthat the recipient can save and open at any time.

Send a File by E-Mail

Use Windows Mail to create a message to your intended recipient, including the e-mail address, subject, and any accompanying text.

Click the Attach File To Message button.

Locate and select the file in the Open dialog box. If you want to send multiple files, hold down the Ctrl key as you select each file.

Click Open.

Click Send to send the message just as you'd send any other message.

Tip

Different mail systems can send or receive different sizes of attachmentssome as small as 1 MB and others as large as 10 MB or more. If you need to transfer a large file or numerous files, try compressing the file or files, or use a different transferral method.

Receive an Attachment

Select a message you've received that contains an attachment.

Click the Attachment icon.

If you want to open a file to view it or work on it, click the file's name. When you've finished working on the file, choose Save As from the File menu to save the file in the location you want.

To save the file or files for future work, choose Save Attachments, and use the Save Attachments dialog box to specify where you want to save the file or files. Select the files you want to save, and click Save.

Try This!

Double-click a message containing one or more attachments to open the message in a separate window. Right-click one of the attachments in the Attach line. Use any of the commands from the menu that appears.


Caution

Viruses are often distributed in attached files, so don't open an attachment from an unknown sender, and do make sure that you have a good anti-virus program installed on your computer.


Try This!

Open a folder window, and select one or more files. Right-click one of the files, point to Send To on the shortcut menu, and choose Mail Recipient from the submenu. In the e-mail message that appears, address the message, add any text you want, and send it.
