Controlling Your Startup Programs

Sometimes, after you've installed a program, you'll find that it starts whenever Windows Vista starts. That's okay if it's what you want, but if you'd rather have the program start only when you want it to, you can remove it from the list of programs that start automatically when Windows starts. Some of these programs might be in the Startup folder of the Start menu, where you can easily remove them; others are instructed to start from the Windows Registry, an area you probably don't want to venture into. Fortunately, Windows Defender makes it easy for you to access and modify these program settings.

Control the Programs

Click the Start button, type defend in the Search box of the Start menu, and click Windows Defender. In the Windows Defender window that appears, click Tools to display the Tools And Settings window, and click Software Explorer to display the Software Explorer.

Click Startup Programs.

Examine the programs. Select a program that you don't want to start when Windows starts, and click Disable.

Restart the computer, do some work to verify that the computer runs as you want it to without the program, and then repeat step 1 to open the Software Explorer. Select the program you disabled, and do either of the following:

  • If your computer ran properly without the program, click Remove to remove the program from the Startup list.

  • If the computer didn't run well without the program, click Enable to have the program start when Windows starts.

Close the Software Explorer when you've finished.

Tip

You can use the Software Explorer to view all the programs running on your computer. Although you can use this tool to help diagnose problems associated with badly behaving programs, the process of correcting such problems can be complex, so you'll probably need some help from an expert.
