Automatically Synchronizing Media with a Portable Device

If you prefer to listen to your music or watch your videos while you're on the go instead of sitting at your computer, provided you have a compatible device, you can have Media Player automatically synchronize the content in your Media Library with the content on your portable device. When the files are transferred, they're automatically converted to the format required by the portable device.

Set Up the Synchronization

In Windows Media Player, with your portable device attached to the computer and properly set up, click the Sync tab if it isn't already selected. Click the Sync tab again, point to the name of the device on the drop-down menu, and choose Set Up Sync from the submenu to display the Device Setup dialog box.

Specify whether you want to automatically synchronize the device when it's connected to your computer.

If you chose automatic sync, you can now add, delete, or create new playlists to set the list of items you want to be included in the sync. Drag the playlists up or down to set the priority of synchronizing if all the items you want won't fit on your device.

Select this option if you want to automatically replace the existing files on the device with different files from your playlists.

Click Finish, and wait for the files to be synchronized.

After the files have been synchronized, click the device's name to expand the list, and then click Sync Results to verify that the files you want on the device have been synchronized.

Control the Synchronization Settings

Click the Sync tab down arrow, point to the device on the drop-down menu, and choose Advanced Options from the submenu to display the Properties dialog box for the device.

Select this option if you want the synchronization to occur when the device is connected.

Use the slider if you want to prevent the synchronization from filling up the entire device.

Click the Quality tab, and specify whether you want the files to be converted automatically or by using your settings.

Click OK.

Tip

To turn off automatic synchronization, click the down arrow below the Sync tab, point to the device, and choose Set Up Sync from the submenu. Clear the Sync This Device Automatically check box, and click OK.

Tip

Use Shuffle mode if the quantity of media in your library is too large to fit on your device and you want access to different materials each time you synchronize.

Try This!

Click the Start button, type sync in the Search box, and click Sync Center. In the Sync Center window that appears, click the tasks that are listed to see the status of your device and a history of its synchronizations. Note that the Sync Center shows all the devices that have been set up for synchronizing, including smart phones and other devices.

Tip

In addition to dedicated portable music or video players, you can synchronize with a removable memory device such as a USB flash memory device that you can then use with a different computer or device.
