Other Users Journals

Other Users' Journals

The Journal Directory, accessible from the Journal module's main page, lists all available journals. Figure 17.4 shows the list, which provides access to the journal (by clicking the user's name or the binoculars icon) and provides the capability to view a member's profile or send a private message. Viewing another member's journal is much like viewing your own, except that you can't edit or delete their entries.

The fun part about journals is that they can contain anything. They don't have to relate to the site at all; they could relate to a user's other personal interests, hobbies, and so forth, or they might just contain the user's opinions on politics, religion, books, or whatever. As shown in Figure 17.5, you can write a comment about the journal entry and share your own thoughts or opinionsmuch as you can do with other, standalone blogs on the Web.

You'll also notice a Send This Journal to a Friend link. This isn't a feature you can disable, but it does present a potential security issue you should be aware of. This feature allows users to send the text of a journal entry to another e-mail address. Users are asked to supply their own name and e-mail address, along with the name and e-mail address of their friend; however, none of this information is verified. It's easy for an unscrupulous user to send journals to anyone and to mask their identity when doing so. Restricting access to the Journals module to registered users may help reduce the likelihood of this type of abuse occurring, since hopefully your own loyal users won't use your Web site to send spam to other individuals.
