Before You Install PHP-Nuke

You have to understand that this is a book on PHP-Nuke, not on Linux, Apache, MySQL, and the other things that PHP-Nuke needs to run. So before you try installing PHP-Nuke, here's a quick checklist to follow to make sure everything else is working okay:

  • Can you view static HTML pages on your Web server?

  • Can you view a PHP page, such as the phpinfo.php page that comes with many PHP distributions, on your Web server?

  • Can you install and use a tool like phpMyAdmin, which is a Web-based MySQL administrative tool? If you can, you know that MySQL is up and running properly.

  • Can you perform all these previous tasks not just from the server itself, but from a Web browser that's running on another machine?

Obviously, if you're going to have someone else host your site, these things are their concern; if you're building your own server, these are sort of the minimum levels of functionality needed before installing PHP-Nuke is even a consideration.

Sorry if this comes across as a cop-out, but the sheer number of Linux variations, Apache versions, MySQL distributions, and other variables make it impossible to address even a fraction of the possibilities in this book. My general experience has been that if all of the previous items are working okay, your PHP-Nuke installation will go off without a hitch.
