Reading the Forums

Another posting option, given to administrators and moderators, is to post an announcement or a sticky. The option is located just above the Add a Poll option when posting a new topic; as shown in Figure 57.4, these receive special treatment in the topics listing.

Figure 57.4. Listing the topics in a forum.

Figure 57.4 shows the topic listing users see when they click on a forum name from the main Forums module screen. Sticky posts remain at the top of the list and receive a special message icon; use stickies to keep a particular topic, like forum rules, at the top of the topics list. Similarly, announcements receive a special icon and show up at the top of the list. Other icons include these:

  • A yellow icon for topics with a recent reply

  • An animated yellow icon for posts that have enough replies to qualify as "popular"

  • A white icon for posts with no new replies since your last visit

  • An animated white icon for "popular" posts with no new replies

  • A yellow lock for locked topics with new replies

  • A gray lock for locked topics with no new replies

The Mark All Topics Read link marks all topics with new replies as having been read, meaning the new replies will now be considered old replies, and the topics will appear with the appropriate white icon rather than a yellow icon.

Here's a tip: Clicking on the small icon just after the user's name, under the Last Post column, takes you directly to the latest reply in the topic. It's a quick way, especially in long topics, to get to the most recent material.
