Banner Administration

Click the Banners icon in the Administration menu to manage your banners. You start as shown in Figure 44.2, by creating one or more clients. These represent people whom you display ads for, and you can definitely create a client to represent yourself. As shown, you enter the client's basic information and also a login name and password. Vendors can use this information to log in and check their own banner statistics on your site.

Figure 44.2. Creating a banner client.

With at least one client created, you can begin adding banners. Banners are associated with a client. As shown in Figure 44.3, you provide a URL to the banner graphic, a URL where the user should go if the banner is clicked, and an alternate text. The alternate text is displayed if the banner graphic isn't available for some reason (which is usually temporary). Note that both the banner and click URLs should start with "http://" if they point to a Web server other than your own. I suggest having your clients keep their banners on their own Web servers; doing so helps conserve your Web server's bandwidth, which most hosting companies charge for. However, note that some Web browsers allow users to block banners that come from servers other than your own; these users won't see your banners if the banners are hosted on a different Web server.

You can also enter the number of impressions a banner will receive. This is the number of times the banner will be displayed; you may want to sell banner space based on impressions (say, $100 for 10,000 impressions). After the requested number of impressions has been delivered, the banner will self-deactivate (you can always reactivate it later, if desired). Enter 0 for unlimited impressions, meaning the banner will remain active until you either delete it or manually deactivate it through the Banners Administration module.

Be sure to pay attention to the type of banner you add: Block banners will appear only if you've added the Advertising block to your site.
