The transition from Linux version 2.4 to version 2.6 has seen an abundance of kernel changes that have improved database server performance. Some of the changes, such as multiple run queues, enhance SMP scalability by removing serialization points. Other changes, such as vectored I/O, asynchronous I/O, and direct I/O, provide kernel services that, on other platforms, have been known to help database performance. The good news is that most of these changes are available in the 2.4 kernel release through the SUSE or RHEL distributions. As Linux continues its shift into the database server domain, more performance bottlenecks will be exposed, driving kernel development to improve performance, and in the process making Linux more attractive as a solution for all types of database application workloads.
