Ability to change jobs

Another issue that has been coming up increasingly in candidate inter- views is ˜Can I change jobs, or even pursue an alternative career if I want to without leaving the company?' A lot of companies are not geared up even to answer the question, never mind deliver on it. But it does make sense to think about it, because rather than lose someone who doesn't like what they are doing - and doesn't identify with the role - you can allow them to move internally to a job that reflects that lifestyle of theirs (or the new lifestyle they have recently acquired , possibly through getting married or having children). One professional services company, Deloitte and Touche, had a huge shock some years ago when they developed an electronic job vacancy board and 40 per cent of the staff applied for new jobs in the first 48 hours. Again this underscores the lifestyle need to be yourself at work. Often people's lifestyles change, but the job doesn't. All you get then are bored, unproductive and increasingly restless and resentful employees . Very often, people leave a company to go and do a totally different job in another company when they probably - if anyone had bothered - could have been easily accommodated with out taking the drastic decision to quit. When you consider the cost of recruitment, asking people if their own personal needs are being fulfilled at performance review time, and being able to do something about it if they are not, would be a great idea.
