Exam Essentials

  • Know how to recover from particular backup strategies.   The exam will give you a scenario where a particular backup strategy has been used. You will be asked how to restore the database, so it is important to be able to understand the difference between the different types of backups and what should be done next in a restore strategy.

  • Understand the different database recovery models.   Understanding the database recovery models will allow you to take the correct course of action in the event of a database failure.

  • Know how to use database snapshots.   It is important to understand how you can use database snapshots to recover from data deletions and not from hardware failure.

  • Understand page restores.   Make sure you understand the sequence of steps required to restore damaged pages.

  • Know how to use tail-logs.   Don’t forget to back up the orphaned transaction log, if possible, when a database fails to capture all DML operations made after the last transaction log backup.

  • Understand clustering.   Make sure you are familiar with the different ways in which to configure a cluster solution and how to manage a cluster environment.

  • Understand the RESTORE LOG options.   Make sure you understand what the RECOVERY, NORECOVERY, STOPAT, STOPATMARK, and STOPBEFOREMARK options do and when to use them.

  • Know all the high-availability options.   Make sure you are familiar with the different features of failover clustering, database mirroring, log shipping, and replication. It is important to be able to analyze the business requirements, consider any technical constraints, and choose the appropriate high-availability solution.
