Chapter 4: Exploring Your Inventory

 < Day Day Up >

This chapter is designed for application development project managers or group leaders and explains how to explore the contents of the WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer database. We describe how to obtain a general overview of your application. Along the way, you will gain a better understanding of how useful this product can be for your organization. We then describe how to find specific items within your application.

We also discuss how to use some advanced functions provided in WSAA. These include how to use the visual relationships and how to determine your application code’s e-business rating.

4.1 Finding information about your applications

Using a Web browser, you have the ability to use WebSphere Studio Asset Analyzer (WSAA) to help you define the scope of the business projects you are asked to undertake. The product lets you see your applications in both a general and detailed way. To show you how to go about obtaining this information, we used a sample application.

4.1.1 Our sample application

The demonstration application we use in this redbook is the Trader 2 stock trading application. The users of this application might be investors checking their holdings, or buying and selling shares of stock. The application takes two forms:

  • Batch job

  • CICS transaction

Each form can access data on VSAM files, DB2, or IMS/DB (also known as DL/I) databases.

You might have seen this application in various IBM Redbooks and in a variety of incarnations during the past two years. As simple as it is, it helps us show you aspects of WSAA in a straight-forward manner. Appendix C, “The Trader 2 application” on page 185 briefly describes the organization and contents of the components used in this demo.
