Summary

The use of teams in organizational settings is no longer a new strategy. However, there are as many poor examples of the use of teams as there are good ones. Problem-solving teams, self-directed work teams, and leadership teams have proven to be successful business strategies for many companies. But when management merely declares that "we are all one big team" or that former departments are now to be known as teams, they are doomed to failure. Teams must be built and maintained . This chapter has described elements for leadership to emphasize at various stages of a team's development. Your ability to help a team examine and improve on the seven key components of team excellence provides the X-factor for success. Help your teams help themselves .

EXERCISE 12

Teambuilding As an Ongoing Effort

Directions: Answer the questions below individually and as a team at the beginning of each teambuilding session. Keep in mind that the first session provided the opportunity to learn more about each team member, examine collective strengths and weaknesses, and develop some plans, and for each individual to commit to some behaviors that would help this team. The following questions are a follow-up to ensure that the team is on the right track.

  1. What was something you learned (or relearned) about yourself, a teammate, or this team in general during the previous session?

  2. What attitudinal and/or behavioral changes have you attempted since our last teambuilding session to help this team become a bit more effective or satisfying ? What were the consequences of your efforts?

  3. Which teammates have you seen attempting things to help this team? What did they do? What were the consequences?

  4. What do you now believe are the key strenghts and the key weaknesses of this team?

  5. What needs to happen in today's session to help this team to continue to improve?
