Summary

In this chapter, you learned that:

  • q User Profiles is a database that contains information about users, such as Department, Phone number, and Skills.

  • q SharePoint can import user accounts from Active Directory, and you can create user profiles in SharePoint, with the user's properties.

  • q SharePoint can also import user accounts from any LDAP-compatible directory, such as Novell NDS.

  • q SharePoint can import user properties from Business Data Catalog sources to existing user profiles.

  • q It is possible to create new user profile properties, either for manual update, or to be mapped to external directory sources, such as Active Directory or LDAP sources.

  • q You can target information, such as news pages, links, documents, and Web Parts, to specific groups of users, known as audiences.

  • q Targeting works with Audience Groups, SharePoint Groups, Distribution Lists, and Security Groups.

  • q You must enable audience targeting in list and libraries before it can be used.

  • q To present a targeted view of list items and documents, you must use the Content Query Web Part.

  • q Use "Publishing links to Office client applications" to target links for the Save and Open options in MS Office.

  • q Use the Navigation option in Site Settings to create targeted navigation links, displayed in the Quick Launch bar.

  • q Use "Personal site links" to create targeted navigation links in users' My Sites.

  • q Searching is now possible also in WSS 3.0.

  • q WSS Search is not dependent on SQL Server Full-Text Indexing, as it was in WSS 2.0.

  • q WSS Search also works with the SQL Express database.

  • q To search for a file type, it must be defined in the File types list, plus a corresponding IFilter must be installed on the SharePoint server responsible for the Indexing service.

  • q MOSS Searching can index content in almost any location, such as in file servers, web servers (both internal and on the Internet), Exchange databases, Lotus Notes databases, and any external database that the SharePoint server has a BDC connection defined for.

  • q By default, MOSS's crawl schedule is not defined, that is, the content in SharePoint will not be indexed; you must configure this schedule manually.

  • q Configure new Content Sources to enable the crawler to index information stored outside SharePoint.

  • q Use Search Scopes to limit the search area; for example, to a specific content source.

  • q By default, all SharePoint sites are indexed.

  • q You can define a specific user account to be used by the crawler when indexing a specific content source.

  • q Enable IRM to achieve a higher level of security for the documents stored in document libraries.

In the next chapter, you will learn more about web content management in MOSS 2007.
