Summary

In this chapter you learned that:

  • q All SharePoint sites you create will have a site template applied.

  • q The is no real difference between WSS sites and MOSS sites, except the type of site templates applied.

  • q The site templates for WSS 3.0 are designed to ease collaboration within teams and groups.

  • q There are two new WSS site templates, not found in the previous version: Wiki and Blog.

  • q When installing MOSS, you get a number of new site templates, most of them based on Publishing Pages.

  • q Publishing Pages are built on MS CMS and extended with new features such as workflows.

  • q Some of the site templates in MOSS can only be applied to top sites, such as the Collaboration Portal.

  • q After a site is created, it has no relation to the site template that was used. It will not react if the site template is modified.

  • q The look and feel of a site's menus, navigation elements, and logotypes are under the control of a Master Page. You can apply a new or modified Master Page anytime to update the look and feel.

  • q My Site is a personal site available for all users. It has two views: a personal view and a public view.

  • q My Site has a public view that lists information and properties for a particular user. Some of this information may be managed by the user.

  • q My Site has special Web Parts for social networking. This will make it easier for users to find colleagues and people they have something in common with.

In the next chapter, you will learn more about the integration between SharePoint sites and MS Office clients.
