Backing Up MOSS 2007

The obvious thing to do after a successful installation is to back up the SharePoint server. You will read a lot more about backing up and restoring in Chapter 14. However, since you have just completed a MOSS installation, you are probably anxious to know how to protect your work with a backup, so the basics of backing up MOSS are covered here.

With MOSS 2007 come two backup programs: One is the stsadm.exe utility, and one is a backup procedure included in SharePoint's Central Administration tool. Using the latter, you can quickly create a full backup of your new MOSS environment, including both user web sites and administrative web sites. In previous versions of SharePoint, you needed to have SQL Client Tools installed on the SharePoint server in order to perform backup and restore, but this is not necessary in SharePoint 2007. To use the Central Administration backup procedure, make sure that the following accounts have Write permission to the file backup location:

  • q The database server's SQL service account.

  • q The WSS Timer service account (the same account as the Central Administration application pool account: sp_appservice).

  • q The user account used by the Central Administration application pool.

Follow the steps in the Try It Out below to back up your new MOSS server.

  1. Log on to the MOSS server as an administrator.

  2. Select a shared disk resource where you can store the backup files; for example, \\DC1\SPBackup. Make sure that the accounts in the bulleted list above have Write permission to that share.

    Important

When you create a new file share in Windows 2003, it will by default set the permission for the group Everyone = Read. This will prohibit even administrators from writing to that share. Add the user accounts in the bulleted list above with Write permissions, or enable the group Everyone to have Full permission.

  3. Start SharePoint's Central Administration tool: Start image from book All Programs image from book Microsoft Office Server image from book SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.

  4. Switch to the Operations page.

  5. In the Backup and Restore section, click Perform a backup. This will display a web form where you define what to back up (see Figure 4-6). Note that the smallest object you can back up is a web application (one or more site collections belonging to that web application). You can also make a backup of the complete farm, as described here:

    Figure 4-6

    1. Check the Farm check box. This will ensure that the complete farm is backed up.

    2. Click Continue to Backup Options.

    3. On the following page, make sure to select Type of backup = Full. Set the backup location where the backup files will be stored; for example, \\srv1\bkup. Note that an estimate of the volume to be backed up is listed here. When ready, click OK.

    4. The backup process now starts, and a status page is displayed (see Figure 4-7). When the backup is completed, this page sets the property Phase = Completed.

  6. Open the file location where the backup files are stored. You will see a file named spbrtoc.xml. This is a manifest file that describes all the backups stored in this folder; without this file you cannot perform a restore, so be sure to protect it! Note that this location also contains a subfolder named spbrnnnn, where nnnn is a index starting with 0000 that increases by one every time you run a new backup process. Inside that folder are a large number of files containing the content that is backed up.

Now you have a complete backup of all data, including any index files and user profile data. You do not need to run a SQL backup. You have everything you need to perform a full restore if you lose data.

Important

Running this type of backup will not back up the file structure of SharePoint, IIS settings, or domain user accounts. In order to restore data with this backup, you must have a MOSS installation with the same settings as when you ran the backup process. Otherwise, you may not be able to restore everything! A simple way to do this is to run a full file backup on the MOSS server, including "System State," which will also back up the IIS Metabase and the Registry database on the server.
