Using the Grid

graphics/troubleshooting_icon.jpg

I'm having trouble getting my layout to line up right. What tools in Dreamweaver will help?

Turning on the grid can provide a visual guide while you're working with layout tables. The grid also enables you to control snapping, which, when turned on, allows the elements on your page to snap to the grid's parameters rather than float randomly . To control the grid settings, select View, Grid, Grid Settings. When the Grid Settings dialog box appears, you can modify the display of the grid and the snap settings. If you want to turn on snapping, check the Snap to Grid check box. If you want to turn it off, make sure the check box is clear.

Adding Content

I'm having difficulties adding content to a layout table. What's the solution?

You can place content only in a layout cell, not a table. So, if you have no cells in the layout table, you need to create some for your content. Or you might be clicking outside the layout cell. Be sure that, if you have an existing layout cell, you are working within that cell . Cells will be white rather than gray.

Using Frames to Contain Other Sites

What if I want to keep part of my site available at all times while displaying content from an external site? Can I just link the external site into one of my own frames?

Can you? Technically speaking, yes. Legally speaking? Questionable. People have argued over this very issue, and the general sense is that if doing this isn't exactly illegal, it demonstrates a complete lack of etiquette, and may also confuse newcomers to the Web. There have been court cases in which framed content has been considered copyright infringement when incorporated into someone else's site, so it is recommended that you do not use this practice without explicit permission.

Printing Frames

How can I make my framed pages easily printable?

Provide a link to a printable format, a downloadable text file, an HTML or XHTML document, or even a Portable Document Format (PDF) file.

Conversion Concerns

I'm attempting to use the conversion feature to convert layers to tables, but my design isn't being preserved. Any suggestions?

If your layers overlap, are on a timeline, or are hidden, as in pop-out menus , the conversion process can't preserve your design. You'll still need to make considerable modifications to the converted file to make it acceptable for viewing.
