How do I bend text?

graphics/troubleshooting_icon.jpg

Unlike other graphics or image editing programs, there doesn't seem to be a way I can bend text around a shape. Can you do this in Fireworks?

Certainly. It just takes a couple of steps. First, trace a path with the pen tool. Then select your text and the path you have just drawn and use the Attach to Path command found in the Text menu. You can tinker with the settings in the Property inspector.

Blank Answers Panel

My Answers Panel is blank even when I'm connected to the Internet. Does Fireworks not like me?

There are two possible fixes for this scenario. Let's take the easiest approach first. Undock the Answers panel by dragging the panel by its gripper (the dots on the left side of the panel group 's title bar). Move the panel to the middle of the workspace. Click the Close button on the upper-left corner of the panel to close the Answers panel. Relaunch the Answers panel (Window, Answers) and you should see content in the panel. If so, redock the panel by dragging it by the gripper back to the other panel groups.

If you don't see content in the Answers panel after trying the first step, you need to restore an initialization file. When Fireworks MX is launched, the Answers panel locates an initialization file (shim_init.xml), which sends content information to the Macromedia Flash file used to display the Answers panel. The following steps force Fireworks to copy out a new ship_init.xml and all related files so that the Answers panel is restored.

Close Fireworks MX and then open the Application Data (Windows) or Application Support (Macintosh) folder:

  • Windows 2000, NT and XP ” C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data

  • Windows 98 and ME ” C:\Windows\Application Data

  • Macintosh OS X ” Macintosh HD:Users:<username>:Library:Application Support:Macromedia

  • Macintosh OS 9.X ” Macintosh HD:System Folder:Application Support:Macromedia

Move the Fireworks MX folder from the Macromedia folder to the desktop. This folder will now serve as your backup Fireworks MX folder.

In the Application Data (Windows) or Application Support (Macintosh) folder open the Flash Player folder. Open the localhost folder and delete the Fireworks MX folder.

Relaunch Fireworks.

Quit Fireworks and then replace any components such as preferences, commands, styles, and so on from the backup Fireworks MX folder (on the desktop) into the appropriate locations in the new Fireworks MX folder.

The next time you launch Fireworks, the Answers panel should appear with its contents.

Stopping and Starting the Polygon Lasso Tool

After I start using the Polygon Lasso tool, is there a way I can go back a step without having to start all over again?

To go back a step, simply release the mouse button. Hold down the Shift key, press Alt, then release the Alt key to temporarily display an arrow cursor. The selection path will be reset to wherever you click with the arrow cursor. The cursor will then revert back to the Polygon Lasso tool and you can continue your work.
