The Origin of Organized WarDriving

  • The idea of organized WarDriving has probably been around as long as the idea of WarDriving itself. People enjoy getting together with others that share similar interests to socialize and exchange ideas.

  • The DefCon 10 WarDriving Contest was the first publicized and organized WarDrive that took place on a large scale.

  • Once they returned home from DefCon, participants in the DefCon 10 WarDriving Contest that lived near each other wanted to get together to WarDrive in their hometowns.

The WorldWide WarDrive Is Born

  • A small WarDrive of Baltimore, Maryland was publicized on the Internet.

  • People from other areas expressed interest in WarDriving their areas at the same time, and the idea of a World Stumbling Day was discussed.

  • The World Stumbling Day became the WorldWide WarDrive, an organized effort by security professionals and hobbyists to provide a statistical analysis of the security posture of currently deployed wireless networks.

What the Results of the WorldWide WarDrive Mean

  • The results of the first WorldWide WarDrive are probably statistically invalid because too small of a sample was collected.

  • The second WorldWide WarDrive took place a few weeks after the first and provided a much more realistic snapshot of the state of wireless security. This is primarily because the statistical sample was much larger. Many more areas were also represented. Unfortunately, the statistics showed that a large number of wireless networks were deployed with little or no security measures enabled.

  • The third WorldWide WarDrive was the most successful WorldWide WarDrive to date. More than three times the number of access points were discovered.

  • Many more areas were covered for the third WorldWide WarDrive. This also provided a more realistic view of the security of wireless networks worldwide than its predecessors did.

  • About one of every four access points currently deployed still uses the out-of-the-box configuration; however, this number has decreased during the course of the WorldWide WarDrives.

  • Only about one third of wireless networks deployed are using the built-in encryption that is available. This number has also increased throughout the history of the WorldWide WarDrive. This indicates that the message is getting out to the end users.

The Future of the WorldWide WarDrive

  • The WorldWide WarDrive will continue as an annual event as long as it is relevant.

  • The WorldWide WarDrive will continue to improve the way that participants can upload their data and get instant feedback on the results.
