Working with Your Presentation

Now that you have finished creating your first presentation, it's time to learn how to play it back one slide at a time as a slide show, save it for future use, load a presentation that you've saved so that you can use it, and print a presentation.

Playing a Presentation as a Slide Show

To play back a presentation as a slide show, select Slide 1 in the Slide pane or select the slide where you would like the show to start (remember to use the arrow buttons to scroll the tabs if you can't see the tab you want). Then, when the first slide is selected, choose Slide Show, Slide Show from the menu bar at the top of the Impress application window or press your F5 key. When you start the slide show, your display clears and the first slide of your presentation fills the entire screen.

In Slide Show mode, click the mouse button or press the right-arrow key to proceed to the next slide. Press the left-arrow key to return to the previous slide. When you want the slide show to end or want to return to your desktop, press the Escape key.

Saving, Loading, and Printing Presentations

If you've already finished studying the preceding two chapters on OpenOffice.org Writer and OpenOffice.org Calc, you're probably familiar with the process of saving, loading, and printing documents in OpenOffice.org applications. Just in case you need it, here's a quick refresher:

  • To save a presentation after you finish creating all your slides, choose File, Save As from the menu bar near the top of the Impress application window. In the dialog box that appears, enter a name for the presentation file in the Name box. If you need to use an Impress presentation with Microsoft PowerPoint later, be sure to click Browse for other folders and then select a Microsoft PowerPoint format from the file type drop-down list before saving.

  • To load a presentation that you've previously saved, choose File, Open from the menu bar near the top of the Impress application window. Use the file dialog box to locate the presentation you want to load; then double-click it. After the presentation is loaded, you can play it back as a slide show by choosing Slide Show, Slide Show from the menu bar or pressing the F5 key.

  • To print the slides from an Impress presentation, choose File, Print from the menu bar near the top of the Impress application window. Click OK to print all the slides in the presentation. To print only certain slides, select Pages from the Print Range area and enter a list of comma-separated (for individual pages) or dash-separated (for page ranges) slide numbers into the entry box. For example, entering 3-5,8,10 would print the slides currently in positions 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10.
