Loading Modules at Install Time

In some casesmost notably when either your hard drive or CD-ROM drive is connected to your computer via a SCSI controllerFedora Core 4 cannot start the installer right away because either it isn't able to find your CD-ROM drive or it isn't able to find your hard drive. This situation occurs because none of the drivers in the installer's default driver list is able to communicate with your hardware. In this case, the installer asks about the nature of your hardware and then asks you to select a driver, as shown in Figures A.1 through A.3.

Figure A.1. The installer can't find a hard drive.

Figure A.2. The installer asks whether you would like to load drivers manually.

Figure A.3. The installer asks you to choose the driver for the controller to which your hard drive is connected.

When you are given a list of driver modules, scroll up and down through the list until the one that matches your hardware is highlighted. Then press Tab until the word OK is highlighted, and the driver will be loaded.

Generally, if you can't find the module in a list, you can press your F2 key to search from an additional list of modules. After you press F2, a message box appears, asking you to insert the driver floppy disk you learned to make in Chapter 1, "Preparing to Install Fedora Core 4"; insert the disk and press Enter. An alternate list of drivers is displayed.

After you select the correct driver, the Fedora Core 4 installer finds your hardware, and the installation process proceeds as outlined in Chapter 2, "Installing Fedora Core 4."
