Connections

 < Day Day Up >

In Chapter 6, you learned about how connections work within a universe and provide access to either the source OLTP or a data warehouse. Secured connections are the only ones that appear in Supervisor and are denoted with a yellow key. While Supervisor allows many resources to be assigned to specific groups and users, connections are not considered a resource and apply to all groups and users.

BusinessObjects supports three different types of connections, each denoted with a unique symbol:

  • Personal connections that users may create for free-hand SQL or that universe designers create when testing new data sources. The definitions reside in C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects 5.0\LocData\pdac.ssi (personal data account.shared security information).

  • Shared connections that are shared via work group folders on a LAN server. The definitions reside in SDAC.SSI.

  • Secure connections that reside in the BusinessObjects repository. Designers and supervisors create and modify secure connections, which are the most common in enterprise-wide deployments.

When you create a connection in Designer and set the connection type to secure, the definitions are immediately added to the repository security domain and appear in Supervisor. All the connection options and tabs (Login, Advanced, Custom) that exist in Designer appear in Supervisor. Because the connection information is global and affects all universes, I recommend you use Supervisor, not Designer, to review and maintain connections.

In the following example, you will create a secure connection for the BEACH.UNV or Island Resorts Marketing. Explanations for the various connection settings are in Chapter 6.

  1. Log on to Supervisor. If you receive a message that you are not authorized to use Supervisor, contact your BusinessObjects administrator.

  2. Select Tools | Connections or click the Connections button on the toolbar. See Table 12-1 for a complete list of buttons available in Supervisor.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Select the network driver for this connection: ODBC Drivers. This becomes the Network Layer and determines which database.prm and database.sbo files BusinessObjects uses to build the universe and generate the SQL.

  5. Enter the connection name Beach DB.

  6. Select the database engine MS Access 2000.

  7. I have selected alternative 3 (see Chapter 6, Table 6-2) for my security approach and so have entered a shared username and password.

  8. For ODBC databases, the data source name comes from local ODBC definitions. For Oracle, the data source name may come from a TNSNAMES.ORA file. For other databases, the name may be manually entered.

  9. Always test a new or modified database connection. If you have defined your login information correctly and the database is operational, Supervisor will confirm “The Server is Responding!”

  10. If you click the Details button in the Test Connection dialog box, Supervisor will provide you with additional information on your connection settings. The following example shows information from testing an Oracle connection:

    Database server version: Oracle9i Release 9.0.1.1.1 - Production PL/SQL Release 9.0.1.1.1 - Production CORE 9.0.1.1.1 Production TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 9.0.1.1.0 - Production NLSRTL Version 9.0.1.1.1 - Production BusinessObjects configuration: Network Layer: Oracle OCI DBMS Engine: Oracle 8.1 DLL: C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Data Access 5.0\SQBOCI50.DLL SBO: C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Data Access 5.0\Oracle\Oracle PRM: C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Data Access 5.0\Oracle\ora7 RSS: C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Data Access 5.0\Oracle\oracle

  11. Click OK twice to return and save your Connection.

    Note

Changes to connection information are displayed instantaneously and are global. If one designer changes settings in the Advanced or Custom tab in one universe, these changes will immediately appear in Supervisor and affect all other universes that use the same Secure connection. They do not affect BusinessObjects users currently logged into the repository.
