The Hierarchy Editor

 < Day Day Up >

The default drill path is determined by either the order of the objects as they appear in each class or the existence of a hierarchy. The universe designer must explicitly build a custom hierarchy. If no hierarchy exists in the universe, then BusinessObjects will use the order of the objects as they appear in each class as the drill path. Once the universe designer builds a custom hierarchy, then only the custom hierarchies are enabled for drilling.

The classes and objects shown next exist in the Wine universe. Compare the order of the objects in each class with the hierarchies in Figure 19-1. For multidimensional analysis, the universe designer should ideally reorder the objects within each class to go from top to bottom. However, for standard ad hoc reporting, the designer may decide to sort objects alphabetically, or according to most frequently used, and would create custom hierarchies to provide a meaningful drill path. If you are not satisfied with the way the designer has defined the hierarchies, you, as the user, can modify them for each individual report via the Hierarchy Editor.

  1. To invoke the Hierarchy Editor, select from the pull-down menu Analysis | Hierarchies.

  2. Under Available Dimensions, click the + sign to expand the folder and see all dimension objects within the specified query. Under Available Hierarchies, BusinessObjects displays either the default classes and dimension objects within the current query or the custom hierarchies the designer created. In the preceding example, the class names and hierarchy names are the same; the universe contains no custom hierarchies.

  3. To remove a hierarchy or individual dimension object from the drill path, select the object and click Remove.

  4. To add objects that appear in the query but not in a hierarchy, select the object under Available Dimensions, then select the Hierarchy name to which you want to add the object and click Add. RatingRange and Age are two dimension objects created within the report using formulas. They exist within the document but do not belong to any hierarchy. To add Age to the Vintage dimension, under Available Dimensions highlight Age. Under Available Hierarchies, highlight Vintage and click Add.

  5. To create a New hierarchy, click New. BusinessObjects will insert a generic Hierarchy #, where # is the number of the hierarchy. Type over the Hierarchy # with the dimension name and press ENTER. In the following, I have added Rating as a new hierarchy and added Rating Range as a member of the hierarchy:

  6. To reorder the objects from top to bottom or biggest to smallest, select the object, then select Move Up or Move Down. Reorder the objects within the Producer hierarchy to go from Country Þ Region Þ Producer Þ Label Name to match the drill path specified in Figure 19-1.

  7. Click OK to close the Hierarchy Editor and save all changes to the Hierarchies.
