Chapter 6 -- SQL Server Security Overview

[Previous] [Next]

Chapter 6

This overview of Microsoft SQL Server security will cover both SQL Server 7 and SQL Server 2000. Note that at the time of this writing SQL Server 2000 has not shipped, so some information regarding the new server might change slightly based on last-minute modifications. However, we'll identify information specific to SQL Server 2000—otherwise, all information applies equally well to SQL Server 7 and SQL Server 2000.

SQL Server 7 runs on Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT 4 (Service Pack 4 or later), and Windows 2000. SQL Server 2000 runs on Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4 (SP5 or later), and Windows 2000. Throughout this chapter, for both versions of SQL Server, we'll be describing features only as they run on Windows 2000. Do note that there is no such thing as integrated Windows security in Windows 9x, so if you want SQL Server to be secure you should be running it on Windows 2000.
