Module 1: Installing MySQL

Overview

Although databases can be used for many complex things, they are basically places to store information in a standardized manner. The purpose of a database is to allow you to access data rapidly and to manipulate data so that you can present it in a meaningful and useful manner. A database can be as simple as a list of people who have visited a particular web site and signed the guestbook or as complicated as the financial records for a multinational corporation.

With the rise of e-commerce (buying and selling over the Internet), increasing numbers of people have found a need for a database that is cost-effective , fast, scalable, and easy to use. Judging from the manner in which MySQL is rising in popularity, for many people, it fills that need.

This module covers preparing to use MySQL and installing MySQL on your chosen operating system. First, we will clarify some basic definitions for common database terms and describe how MySQL works as open source software. Then you will find out why choosing a platform should be more than an exercise in brand loyalty. After that, you will go through the step-by-step projects for installing MySQL. Once you have MySQL installed, you will be introduced to its command-line interface. Finally, you will become familiar with the resources available after you have progressed beyond the boundaries of a beginner s guide.
