This chapter introduces you to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family. It describes the different editions available and the features that are unique to each one. It also describes the hardware requirements for each edition. My goal with this chapter is to help you align your requirements with the appropriate edition of Windows Server 2003, of course, but the chapter is also a road map for what you'll find in the rest of this book.
This chapter and the next describe the compelling features of the Windows Server 2003 family and help you choose the edition that's right for your scenarios. After I've told you why Microsoft believes its newest server operating system is the best it has ever produced, I'll focus more on the technical details of new and enhanced features in Windows Server 2003 and a lot less on convincing you to upgrade. In the meantime, this chapter begins with an overview of the product family.
