The Labs Upshot

 < Day Day Up >

All the experiments in Google Labs are fun. But only three — Google Viewer, Google Glossary, and Keyboard Shortcuts — make practical enhancements to your searching experience.

I don’t want to end this chapter without pointing out the Discuss with others link, which appears next to each experiment on the Google Labs page. These links lead to newsgroup message boards dedicated to each service, on which you can share your experience, give feedback to Google, ask for help, and read what others have to say.

Technical Stuff

Disappointingly, Google doesn’t distribute the messages in these newsgroups beyond its own server, so you can’t read the boards in your newsgroup program. The groups might appear in your newsgroup program, and you might be able to subscribe to them, but no messages are displayed. Likewise, messages you post using your newsgroup program, through your ISP’s Usenet server, do not appear on the boards on Google’s end. The point of all this is that to read and participate in these groups, use the links Google provides and stick to Google’s server. See Chapter 4 for information about Usenet newsgroups and Google Groups.
