Extra Bits

Image Tools p. 34

  • The blank text window right of the thumbnail is for scripts.

Add Image p. 35

  • Keep your site's top-level folder uncluttered by creating new sub-folders when you have more than three or four related pages. Open the Files panel and right-click (Windows) or -click (Mac) to reveal the New Folder choice.

  • The root folder contains all your Web site's files. (In our example, it's Mission Concrete.) Save photos/graphics to the auto-generated subfolder, images, to easily find them.

  • Listed below the image preview are its dimensions, file size, and estimated download time.

  • Always add Alt text for your images. For dialup Web visitors, the alt text appears quickly, enabling them to skip the page if they don't want to wait for the full image. Alt text also is used by special audio Web browsers for visually impaired visitors. If the image is something like a horizontal rule, choose <empty> from the drop-down menu.

Crop Image p. 37

  • Dreamweaver's built-in image editing only works for JPEG and GIF images, the two formats used for most photos and graphics.

Adjust Brightness p. 39

  • The sliders can be hard to control, so type numbers in the text windows for fine adjustments.

Reduce Image p. 40

  • You could use resampling to enlarge an image, but don't. The quality will suffer noticeably. Instead, use your regular image-editing program with the (presumably) larger original.

  • When you click the Resample button, a dialog box warns you that the change is permanent. Since we're using a duplicate, click OK.

Wrap Text with Images p. 42

  • To put the image on the right side with the text down the left, choose Right in the Properties inspector's Align drop-down menu.

  • The Properties inspector's H Space and V Space values are added to both sides of the image (right and left, top and bottom).
