Summary

The PPU solution in HP's Virtual Server Environment eases some of the pain associated with capacity planning and over-provisioning. Instead of purchasing a system that is bigger than needed to handle the peak workload demands, the system can be leased with monthly payments that are based on the actual utilization of the system, like the billing systems water and electricity companies use.

PPU requires users to load special software on every partition in the server. Each partition must have network connectivity to the HP utility meter and must be configured to send usage reports to the meter. The PPU software allows the system identifier to be customized for reporting purposes. In addition, a CPU cap can be configured to control the maximum resource availability and associated payments.

Once the initial system configuration is complete, PPU is very lightweight solution for system administrators. A periodic check of the PPU portal will ensure that all partitions are reporting utilization data appropriately.
