Chapter 19: Bringing It All Together: Creating Your Own Web Site Using IIS

Overview

Now that we've covered all the individual components of IIS, we'll show you how to create your own web site from the ground up. We'll start with a server loaded up with WS03 and end up with a fully functional web site. The site we create will be a simple ASP site with an Access database back end in which users can input their names and other information so we can send out a monthly home brewer's newsletter. Simple programming in this chapter is designed to let you see how this all interconnects.

We'll follow these steps to create our site. (Depending on the type of site you make, your steps may be different.)

  1. Get a domain name.

  2. Get an Internet Protocol address.

  3. Set up the Domain Name System (DNS) entries.

  4. Prepare the server.

  5. Add the web sites to IIS.

  6. Enable Active Server Pages.

  7. Configure the application pool.

  8. Write the code.

  9. Make a database.

  10. Get a certificate for the test site.

  11. Get a certificate for the production site.

  12. Set up web site security.

  13. Test the code.

  14. Roll into production.
