We've mentioned that Windows XP comes with a handy Home Networking Wizard, which can help you set up all the computers on your network. If you'd prefer to use the Wizard, rather than adjusting your settings manually, go ahead and jump ahead to the "Using the Network Setup Wizard" section later in this chapter. Keep in mind, though, that it's not difficult to set up your computers on your own. First, you want to make sure your computer has a name and description.
You also need to establish a workgroup name. When you view the computers connected to your network, they'll be grouped by workgroup. All the computers on your network should have the same workgroup name.
TIP: You can use different workgroup names , if you have a reason to, such as if you maintain several networks in your home. However, this will cause your computers to be grouped separately when you view them in My Network Places. Once you've established your computer and workgroup name, you can move onto the real business of starting a network, sharing files and printers. |
