The most important tools to overcoming NIH Syndrome are the third-party libraries. By using these, you will overcome your fear of external code and learn the proper techniques for evaluating third-party libraries objectively. If you are concerned about quality, it is best to start with heavily used libraries such as the Standard Template Library and Boost for C++. From there, you can work your way toward more specialized libraries suited for your particular application.
Adopting .NET technology is another tool that can be used to increase the number of libraries available for use. You can work your way slowly toward an adoption of .NET, starting by using a language or languages that support .NET, such as C#, Managed C++, or Eiffel, among others. From there it is relatively easy to begin using libraries from other languages and only slightly more difficult to adapt your code to be used by other languages. For platforms outside of Microsoft’s domain, look for future technology similar to .NET such as the open source version of .NET known as Mono.
